Two positions are available with the Triangle Institute for Security Studies.

The Triangle Institute for Security Studies (http://tissiccae.web.unc.edu/) is a consortium of Duke University, North Carolina State University, North Carolina Central University, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Its mission is to enhance understanding of national and international security, broadly defined. To that end it organizes conferences, seminars, field trips, and research projects.  Its clients range from members of the general public, through students and faculty at our universities. Its offshoot, the TISS ICCAE in Intelligence and Security Studies (http://tissiccae.web.unc.edu), focuses on educating students to better understand the intelligence mission through the development of courses and programs. 

 

 Position # 1

The Triangle Institute of Security Studies is seeking a UNC graduate student to serve as a Communications  Assistant for its ICCAE program who will:

  • Maintain existing communications: Collect information about coming events and opportunities from a variety of sources and disseminate these via existing list servs to key clients at least once a week.  Post news about opportunities and events on existing websites. Maintain (or train volunteers) to maintain TISS twitter account.   Design brochures and flyers.  Photograph Events. Compose Press Releases for major events.
  • Develop and improve TISS communications: Develop a contact list of traditional media outlets, to include campus newspapers, campus calendars, and radio stations. Evaluate how emerging social media and other outlets (e.g. video) might be used to better inform clients of our work and assist in our core missions. Develop sustainable new outlets in light of recommendations.    Streamline communications process and improve the design of weekly updates.   

 

Minimum Education and Experience: Relevant Bachelor’s degree required.  Student must be full-time and must be enrolled at UNC-Chapel Hill.

Preferred Qualifications and Experience:

  • Background in Media and Communications (and knowledge of Word Press, Twitter, Facebook, Microsoft Excel, and google-docs).
  • Graphic design experience, with proficiency in graphics systems (preferably to include In-Design and Publisher).
  • Strong research and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
  • High integrity and ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Ability to ensure work products and solutions that are on time and to a high standard.
  • Interest in issues relating to national and international security

-Work Hours: 10 per hours week

Position #2

The Triangle Institute of Security Studies is seeking a UNC graduate student to serve as a Research Assistant for its ICCAE program who will:

 

  • Help design, develop, plan, organize, mobilize resources and motivate attendance for events and activities related to our mission.
  • Help identify ways to help us meet diversity goals.
  • Help identify opportunities for students involved in our programs (conferences, summer study etc.) 
  • Help identify funding opportunities for TISS in general and students in particular.  
  • Capture, curate and analyze relevant data sets to be used in reporting and grant applications.
  • Provide miscellaneous office support as needed.

The Triangle Institute of Studies are open to offering both positions to a single student, should he/she be available to work 20 hours a week and have the required skills. Students interested in this option should make this clear in their cover letter.
