About the award

The UNC Center for Slavic, Eurasian, and East European Studies (CSEEES) is accepting applications from doctoral and masters students enrolled in UNC-Chapel Hill social science programs for the 2021 Summer Research and Language Study Awards. This award program is supported by the Center’s new program, “Expanding Disciplinary Horizons: New Directions in Russian Studies” designed to inspire new social science research and teaching on Russia in a global context. The program is made possible by a grant from the US-Russia Foundation and support from the UNC College of Arts and Sciences and the Chancellor’s Global Education Fund.

The awards support research toward the completion of a doctoral dissertation or masters thesis in Russian studies, interdisciplinary dissertation and thesis research that includes Russia as a case study, and the study of Russian at advanced levels. Preference will be given to applicants pursuing graduate degrees in anthropology, communications, economics, environmental studies, geography, global studies, linguistics, media studies, political science, public policy, sociology, and urban planning.

The Summer Research and Language Study Awards must be used between June and September 2021. An award will provide up to $8,000 in funding to be used toward travel, accommodation, research materials, data collection and evaluation, language certification, and living expenses.

To apply

Interested students should submit a proposal (not to exceed 1,000 words), CV, preliminary budget, and two letters of recommendation from faculty members who can evaluate the proposed research project and/or the benefits of developing an advanced-level language proficiency. Research project proposals should outline the research question(s), methodology, and contribution to Russian studies. Language study proposals need to include a description of concrete professional development and long-term career goals that necessitate advanced proficiency in Russian.

All materials should be e-mailed separately from the recommendation letters to CSEEES Associate Director Adnan Džumhur at dzumhur@email.unc.edu by March 5, 2021.
