Wilson Special Collections Library with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Libraries will offer research fellowships for UNC-Chapel Hill graduate students who wish to use the Library’s collections as a significant source of their dissertations or culminating projects focusing on the American South. Research must be undertaken between January and May 2022.

Only students whose proposals demonstrate a need for extensive use of Wilson Library’s materials will be considered for these awards. Applicants should make use of the Library’s search tools to design their proposal.

Three types of awards are offered:

  1. The Culminating Project Fellowship is for graduate students in master’s programs or professional schools engaged in research for an approved master’s thesis or culminating project required for their degree. The total award is $2,500 in support of 80 hours of onsite library research.
  2. The Pre-Dissertation Prospectus Fellowship allows early doctoral students to explore Wilson Library’s collections to develop their dissertation proposals. The total award is $2,500 in support of 80 hours of onsite library research.
  3. The Dissertation Research Fellowship is awarded to doctoral candidates whose dissertation project draws deeply and substantively on the collections in Wilson Library. This research award can support between 80 hours and 160 hours of onsite library research upon demonstrated need to consult collection materials. The award is $3,500 per 80 hours of onsite library research.

Eligibility

  • All applicants must be masters or doctoral students enrolled full-time in a graduate program at UNC-Chapel Hill.
  • Only students whose proposals demonstrate a need for extensive use of Wilson Library’s materials will be considered for these awards.
  • Fellows must be able to commit to a minimum of 80 hours of onsite library research time in the Library between January and May 2022.
  • Applicants should make note of Wilson Library’s hours to ensure they will be able to accommodate the research time requirement.
  • All applicants agree to participate in the intellectual life of the Library and the fellowship program, which will include a public presentation of research findings and experiences and the submission of a brief research report. Fellows will also be invited to submit papers to a capstone symposium in US Southern studies.

How to Apply

Use Interfolio to submit the following:

  1. Application form 
  2. Research statement: A brief narrative (no more than 1,200 words) of the research project that explains in detail the specific relationship between Wilson Library’s collections and the applicant’s research
  3. Research plan: A substantive list of Wilson Library resources that will be consulted during your fellowship. Brief annotations concerning the relevancy of a collection should be included.
  4. Curriculum vitae
  5. A one-page, confidential letter of recommendation from the academic advisor on the culminating project or dissertation.
  6. A letter from the Director of Graduate Studies confirming the applicant’s current academic status.

Applications will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

  • Merit of the proposal
  • Applicant’s qualifications and letter of recommendations
  • Demonstrated need to access in person the holdings of the Wilson Special Collections Library
