In collaboration with the University Libraries’ Research Hub, the Odum Institute for Research in Social Science is hosting the Thomas M. Carsey Graduate Student Symposium online. Winners will be announced on Friday, February 18, 2022. Video Pitch Submission Deadline for accepted applicants is January 12. Accepted applicants will be notified via e-mail the following week with more details about the event and poster submission.

This symposium is open to master’s and Ph.D. UNC students conducting social research. Students who are interested in participating should ideally submit abstracts by December 1, 2021, at 5 pm.

Three finalists will be selected. Students whose abstracts are selected will then submit a 2 – 3 minute video pitch and headshot, both of which will be posted online for review. Video pitches will be judged by a panel of faculty and experts, who will select the overall poster winner. A popular vote will also take place during Love Data Week 2022 (February 14-18), with members of the public voting for their favorite poster based on the video pitches.
Finalists will also have the chance to attend an exclusive short course on data management and sharing, hosted by the Odum Data Archive team.
The student who submits the winning poster will choose their prize from the following:
1.    A 2-day Data Matters 2022 course (offered by Odum, RENCI and the National Consortium for Data Science)
2.    A 2-day course at the Qualitative Research Summer Intensive in July 2022 (offered by Odum and ResearchTalk)
3.    A 1-day course at the Qualitative Research Summer Intensive in July 2022 (offered by Odum and ResearchTalk)

The student who receives the highest number of popular votes will receive a $100 gift card.
