Paid Graduate Student Fellowship Opportunity for Summer:

Objective: This program provides research experience in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics that support Sandia National Laboratories’ (SNL) Research Foundations(for information about the Research Foundations, please visit https://www.sandia.gov/research/research-foundations/; not all Research Foundations may be participating in 2023). Sandia’s mission is“To render exceptional service in the national interest” as one of the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) National Laboratories.As a DOE National Nuclear Security Administration laboratory, Sandia has a core mission in national security that is synergistically served by science, technology, engineering, and mathematics across a broad range of disciplines in these Research Foundations.

Program Description: Summer Fellows will work in close collaboration with Sandia’s technical staff members to engage in challenging research and development projects. They will also be included in meetings, events, and tours sponsored by the SNL Student Intern Program, SNL Academic Programs, and URA to support professional development and social engagement among the Fellows.

Eligibility: Applicants must be full-time masters or doctoral graduate students and US Persons (any United States citizen or alien admitted for permanent residence in the United States).

Selection: Summer Fellows will be selected from applications received by midnight US Eastern Time January 31, 2023. Selected applicants will receive a stipend and participate in the defined research of a hosting SNL Research Foundation. Diverse students and those from underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply. Selection will be made by URA and the hosting Research Foundations and we anticipate notifying the students selected by March 3, 2023.

Stipend and Inbound/Outbound Travel: Depending on the work location of the Sandian mentor paired with each student selected, the fellowship will be served either at SNL’s Albuquerque, NM or Livermore, CA site. The stipend will be based on 3 months (12 weeks, 40 hours/week) at $36.76/hour in NM ($41.97/hour in CA) for students with a bachelor’s degree and less than two years in graduate school as of May 2023 and $40.62/hour in NM($45.28/hour in CA)for students with two years or more of graduate school as of May 2023. Medical or other employment benefits are not provided. Up to a total of $2,000 will be provided in reimbursement for allowable inbound/outbound travel expenses. Information regarding housing, on-boarding, and other logistics will be provided to the applicants selected.

How to Apply: Students may complete a separate application for each participating Research Foundation for which their graduate program and interests are a good match. All applications must be made through the ORISE Zintellect system (https://www.zintellect.com–click on the Opportunities Catalog tab and search on Sandiain the Keyword box) and should be completed no later than midnight US Eastern time January 31, 2023.

Appointment Dates: The selected Summer Fellows should start work on dates negotiated with the SNL sponsor organization beginning in May 2023and ending in August 2023to encompass 12 weeks, accommodating the end of the spring 2023 semester and beginning of the fall 2023 semester.
