The Graduate School is seeking a Graduate Funding Information Center Research Assistant for academic year 2025-2026. The Graduate Funding Information Center is a resource housed within The Graduate School that assists Carolina graduate students with information about funding for research and study. We seek a highly motivated graduate student who works well within a team environment and has excellent interpersonal/customer service and problem-solving skills.

Responsibilities include leading funding information workshops (format TBD) and individual consultations, survey editing and analysis, online research, data collection, GFIC website maintenance on WordPress (web.unc.edu), and developing and distributing communications (i.e., newsletter and web announcements).

The position requires an average of 15 hours per week and the compensation includes a nine- month stipend ($21,168), full tuition (in-state and out-of-state/TR), mandatory student fees, and health insurance. Preference will be given to candidates who can be available for short virtual training sessions this summer.

Duties of the position are as follows:

  • Funding resource instruction:
    • Develop and teach workshops related to researching funding resources, applying for fellowships and grants, grant writing resources, and related topics. You will be responsible for several general purpose workshops each semester as well as targeted workshops for classes and groups that request them
    • Consult with students, both remotely and in-person, on strategies for identifying funding This includes answering emails sent to the center and providing individual instruction in the use of online funding databases and other resources
  • Survey design and administration:
    • Updating electronic data collection instrument as appropriate (Qualtrics)
    • Data cleaning, including assisting with decisions about eligibility and communication with graduate students
    • Reporting via Qualtrics and Excel
  • Funding information research, organization, and analysis:
    • Assess, manage, and initiate special web or database projects as needed
    • Develop relationships with other offices on campus and graduate departments for synergistic opportunities with faculty and graduate students
    • Link with professional development programming
    • Link with other relevant graduate student needs and services, such as Orientation and Wellness Events
  • Collect and report data related to the overall impact of GFIC, including day-to-day operations and success GFIC prepares reports each semester on the following areas:
    • Workshop attendance, including demographics and feedback from participants
    • Individual student appointments
    • Follow-up surveys
    • Website and database usage
    • Client satisfaction
    • InfoEd Global SPIN usage and effectiveness
  •  Communications:
      • Develop and distribute funding announcements via listserv
      • Respond to student questions and situations via email

Requirements: Strong presentation skills and willingness to speak in front of classroom sized groups; Strong communication and interpersonal skills; Knowledge of Microsoft Office (i.e., Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)

Preferred: Online survey administration experience (i.e. Qualtrics); experience with WordPress; experience with newsletter tools, such as iContact.

This position is an integral part of The Graduate School fellowships team, providing hands-on experience in the daily operations of a campus-wide university administrative unit. It requires the ability to interact professionally with graduate students and administrators in graduate programs across the campus and will enable the student to develop academic partnerships to provide much needed services to the graduate student population. The position will enable the student to learn more about the complex nature of graduate student support and the use of data in higher education within a large public university.
