Seeking Graduate Phillips Ambassador/Teaching Assistant

Background
The Phillips Ambassadors Program, a program of the Carolina Asia Center at UNC-Chapel Hill, awards a
scholarship to up to 25 undergraduate students each year for study abroad in Asia. In addition to studying abroad,
the ambassadors take part in several academic retreats (two before and three after they study abroad) to
contextualize the experience. The retreats, an online discussion forum, and related coursework make up a 3 credit
Global Studies course, taught by the Phillips Ambassadors Academic Director and assisted by one UNC graduate
student. The graduate position is intended to further enrich the overall educational experience of undergraduate
Phillips Ambassadors by involving one outstanding graduate student who is engaged in research related to some
aspect of Asian society, culture or history. The program awards a $6000 stipend (taxable) to the Graduate Phillips
Ambassador to conduct summer research in South, East and/or Southeast Asia.

Requirements
The Graduate Phillips Ambassador will:
• Assist Academic Director with preparation for and implementation of GLBL 281, a 3-credit hour global
studies course. The course will meet on campus from 8:30am-5:00pm on Saturdays 3/28/20 and
4/4/20 plus three TBD Saturdays in fall ‘20
• Contribute actively to the online Sakai discussion forum for the course
• Conduct research in South, East and/or Southeast Asia during summer 2020
• Stay in touch with undergraduate Ambassadors in the country or sub-region where s/he is conducting
summer research if viable
• Provide summary of research conducted and photos upon request
• Attend various Phillips Ambassadors events including luncheon in April, welcome back event in fall and
give back presentations of undergraduate ambassadors as available
• Engage with the Phillips Ambassadors alumni network and social media community

Eligibility
• Current UNC PhD student in good academic standing
• Must be enrolled and present on campus for fall semester following summer research
• Does not have to have been an undergraduate Phillips Ambassador
• All majors welcome
